Reminiscing - 10 Years Later

Memorial Day weekend will always be special in our house. 7 years ago today Brad and I met for the first time, 2 years ago (yesterday) we made the decision to move back to Arlington and picked out the lot for our very first home. Memorial Day weekend has been preceded with both of our college graduations (5 years ago for me and 3 for Brad).

But today, for me, I'm thinking about a special "May 28th" 10 years ago when I graduated from High School with some of the very best friends a girl could have and made some incredible memories I will never forget!! (Including the fact that my dad handed me my diploma and the trip we took to the ER so that my dad and I could BOTH get x-rays, which was shortly followed by a similar trip by my best friend.)

I loved growing up in Sulphur Springs and believe that I had one awesome childhood there.  I would have to say that my Senior year seemed to be a celebration of all the years before.  I was blessed to have incredible friendships, served as a student body officer, participated in my third year of BPA, and was our school's mascot - Wally the Wildcat!  It was just a really fun, memorable year.

That top picture is one of my favorites - it was after we "Snuck" out and ended up getting in a hit and run accident...
Needless to say, we were out SUPER late and exhausted the next day!

Student Council Officers

I feel like we did a pretty good job of "making the most of it" during the whole year - which included mid-week sleep overs, late night adventures, football games and pep rallies, Hearts Festival, Prom, Senior Shut Out and Senior Skip day, and our very last day of senior year where we all decided to stay the entire day.  (I think that was a day the teachers were more ready to go home than the students!!)

Senior Shut Out - Our team got 1st place!!

Hearts Festival and Prom

It was definitely a bit of a weird year too!  My entire life, I experienced everything with my brother who is only 15 months older than me, so it was strange to go through so much while he was away at college (but he did a good job of being home for a lot of the big moments).  Also, we moved in to a rent house over Christmas break while my parent's new house was being built.  We moved out of the house I had lived in since kindergarten and into a house that I barely remember even living in but experienced SO many life changes in (including getting ready for prom and graduation and packing to leave for college).

Senior Sunday at SSFBC

I remember so much about that year, and can remember pieces of the day I graduated like it was yesterday.  The morning started off with graduation practice.  My dad and I had to be ready earlier than everyone else, so i showered first and then headed to my room to get ready.  Like I said earlier, it was a rent house.  We never even set up the second bathroom to be used for showering, so I would just shower in my parent's bathroom.  My dad, rushing in behind me to get ready, slipped and fell on his way in the bathroom.  Did I mention it was an OLD rent house??  When I took my shower, my HOT shower, moisture built up on the floor and that's what my dad slipped on.  He hit his foot pretty hard on the bottom of the cabinets, but we were in such a hurry - with a  FULL night ahead of us - that he just kept on getting ready.

Last day of Senior Year!

Fast forward through arriving at graduation, going through the ceremony (where my daddy presented me with my diploma), and then some quick time with all of our family that came down to cheer me on.  Sulphur Springs does "Project Graduation" to keep the crazies off the street after graduating, and my mom and dad were working it, so there was STILL not time for my dad to focus  on his foot!

Graduation parties

It was SO much fun! The parents always do an awesome job decorating the school and setting up all kinds of things to keep the graduates busy at the all-night lock in where prizes are awarded throughout the night.  My dad BUILT a putt-putt course, there was a pull up challenge, bingo, karaoke, and SO much more.  The gym was set up with all kinds of bounce houses/obstacle courses and a mechanical bull.

This is where the night gets interesting.  On one of the bounce house/obstacle courses...I not-so-gracefully jumped/fell through a hole that was not made for uncoordinated 5 foot 2 girls.  I landed on my ankle wrong.  I did the best I could to fight through it because I didn't really want to miss any of the fun, but the pain (and swelling) kept getting worse.

Did I mention that my mom, dad, and myself along with the other seniors and senior sponsors from our church were leaving for church camp in Florida only TWO hours after the graduation celebration was over?? Oh yeah... we were!  So the issue of my dad's hurt foot and my hurt ankle got a lot more pressing.  After some convincing, we loaded up in my parents car and headed to the ER.  A few hours later we were walking back in the door of the lock in, both in boots, and me on crutches...and passed right by my best friend on HER way to the ER because she had hurt her knee!  Needless to say, we were both on crutches and all three of us slept the best on the bus ride to Florida thanks to some good pain medicine!

Graduation, Graduation Celebration, and heading out for Florida with our new fashion accessories!
